Cognitive Assessment and Clinical Psychology Services for Older Adults

The needs of older adults are different than at other developmental stages, often requiring specialized care. Dr. Jennifer Roberts is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the unique cognitive and mental health needs of aging adults.

Services Provided

  • Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations are diagnostic and cover an individual’s performance in several cognitive domains, including memory, attention, processing speed, visuospatial ability, and executive function. They are used to determine the possible causes of cognitive difficulties beyond what would be expected in the normal aging process (e.g., cognitive lapses due to Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias). The results and recommendations from a comprehensive evaluation are provided to assist in treatment planning and long-term care. Click the “Services” button to learn more.

  • Many aspects of cognitive function, including memory, peak in our mid-20s and steadily decline with age. It can be difficult to know whether memory lapses are normal aging or due to something more serious. Brief, non-diagnostic, cognitive screens are used to determine whether your current cognitive function is typical for your age or to highlight areas of possible concern. • Dr. Roberts provides individual, couples, and group psychotherapy treatment via telehealth for people experiencing depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relationship concerns, caregiver stress/burnout, and trauma/PTSD. She uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive-behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy, and Caregiver Family Therapy to address client concerns.

Dr. Roberts’ theoretical orientation can be described as integrative, which means she considers the ways in which biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence well-being. When conceptualizing a client’s presenting concerns, Dr. Roberts evaluates symptom patterns, medical and psychological history, developmental history, cultural/social factors, values and beliefs, spirituality, strengths, personality, and interpersonal styles. Dr. Roberts uses a person-centered, values-based, and trauma-informed approach to assessment and treatment, complemented by evidence-based cognitive and behavioral intervention strategies. Underlying her theoretical framework is a relational style focused on building and maintaining a solid therapeutic alliance, which she believes is critically important for effective treatment assessment and growth.
